What Is Cold In-Place Recycling?

CIR (Cold In-Place Recycling) is one of the most sustainable and resilient asphalt recycling technologies available on the market today.

CIR is an in-place, partial depth, asphalt rehabilitation construction technique that has been successfully performed throughout the United States for over 40 years. This in-place asphalt recycling technique eliminates the need to truck off RAP (Recycled Asphalt Pavement) and import new materials, thereby reducing construction greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 90% when compared to conventional construction rehabilitation strategies.

The process mills up an existing layer of asphalt at a depth of 3 to 4 inches. The RAP that is produced by the milling process is then screened, crushed, and sized to meet project specifications. The properly sized RAP is then weighed and conveyed to a pug mill where oil is combined with the RAP to make cold mix. This cold mix is put in a windrow and paved in a fashion similar to a hot mix asphalt paving operation.
